Cross stitch is often a solitary pursuit, but a Stitch-a-Long (or SAL) turns that solo experience into something shared. The beauty of a SAL is that you become part of a community of fellow needleworkers all working on the same design, at the same time, wherever they are in the world.
In this guide, we'll cover everything you need to know, what a SAL is, how it works, and why stitchers of all abilities enjoy them so much.
A stitch-a-long (usually shortened to SAL) is a community stitching event where a group of people all work on the same design at the same time, following along together over a set period of time.
Rather than receiving the full chart in one go, participants are sent sections of the pattern in instalments, typically released every few weeks.
The format transforms what is often a solitary hobby into a genuinely shared experience. Everyone is working on the same design, at the same time, at their own pace and it can be fun to share tips, progress and discover each new section together.
There's something rather wonderful about knowing that stitchers across the country and often across the world, are sitting down with their hoops at the same time as you.

The details are usually similar each time we launch a SAL.
Purchase the kit
This is done ahead of the start date, so you have everything you need ready to go.
Chart sections follow a pattern release schedule
We usually release our instalments every 2 weeks, with the full SAL released over a 2 month period.
A community space
This is predominantly our Facebook SAL group which brings everyone together to share progress, ask questions, and cheer each other on.
You stitch at your own pace
Although you're all stitching at the same time, you choose your own pace - there's no pressure or rush, you're free to pick up your needle whenever life allows.
Stitch-a-longs take place entirely online, which means they're accessible to stitchers wherever they happen to be in the world!

Whether you're brand new to cross stitch or have been stitching for years, there are plenty of brilliant reasons to get involved:
Stay motivated
Having a community stitching alongside you makes it far easier to keep picking up your hoop, especially on a larger project.
Never feel overwhelmed
Receiving the chart in sections means you're only ever focused on one manageable piece at a time
Connect with like-minded people
The cross stitch community is one of the warmest and most welcoming corners of the internet, and a SAL is a brilliant way to become part of it.
Enjoy the anticipation
There's real excitement in waiting for the next section to be revealed and seeing the design slowly come to life.
Get support when you need it
Stuck on a technique or not sure about your thread? The community is always on hand to help.
Make something meaningful
SAL designs are often larger, more ambitious pieces that you might not tackle alone; finishing one is genuinely something to be proud of.
Suitable for all abilities
Whether you're on your first ever project or your fiftieth, a stitch-a-long welcomes everyone.
Stitch-a-longs are designed for stitchers of all experience levels. Beginners benefit enormously from the community support and the accountability that comes with stitching alongside others, beginners will also be able to pick up tips and tricks from more experienced members of the group.
For more experienced stitchers, they will often find fresh enjoyment in the social element and the challenge of a new design.
The instalment format means the project never feels daunting. You're given small sections to work on that feel wholly achievable and means you can be simply focused on the section in front of you, one stitch at a time.
Here at the Historical Sampler Company, our stitch-a-longs are designed with every stitcher in mind. We want everyone, from complete beginners to seasoned needleworkers, to feel confident picking up their needle and joining in.
